Dr. Harlander is an Austrian-born veterinarian who graduated from the Veterinary University of Vienna. She worked at the University of Hohenheim (D), University of Giessen (D) and University of Bern (CH). Dr. Harlander is a Diplomate of the European College of Animal Welfare and Behavioural Medicine. Dr. Harlander is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Animal and Poultry Science at the University of Guelph. Her research aims to explore the core aspects of poultry physical and mental health and strive to determine from the birds’ point of view what they want from their physical and social environments. She tackles these questions by integrating diverse disciplines: behaviour, physiology, neuroscience, genetic, nutrition and experimental biology.
